Medical acupuncture

Medical acupuncture, also known as 'dry needling' is a modern adaptation of Chinese acupuncture in that it uses fine needles inserted into points in the body. However, unlike the traditional form, Western medical acupuncture is based on anatomy, physiology and scientific research and is used to treat musculoskeletal pain. The needles improve local circulation and also interact with the body's nervous system and supress pain signals from the brain. Common areas where medical acupuncture can be effective are the low back, shoulders and neck.

This form of acupuncture is used by health professionals who have a sound knowledge of anatomy and physiology and are able to diagnose and prescribe the use of needles within their treatment to help manage muscular pain. Acupuncture is recommended by the NHS in their NICE Guidelines for low back pain.

Medical acupuncture can be used within your osteopathy or sports massage treatment. Please don't hesitate to ask for further information
